Academician Mzekala Shanidze was born into the family of the renowned linguist Akaki Shanidze. She graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies at Tbilisi State University. The topic of her doctoral dissertation was “Ancient Georgian Translations of the Book of Psalms.” Mzekala Shanidze devoted more than half a century to educating young people at Tbilisi State University, where she lectured on ancient Hebrew, the comparative grammar of Semitic languages, and the history of the Georgian literary language. Of particular note from her scientific legacy is the trilingual catalog of newly discovered manuscripts created with other Georgian scholars after studying manuscripts discovered on Mount Sinai. She has published about 200 works in the fields of Georgian morphology, lexicology, and textual criticism.
